In 1948, a shipping company was founded that started passenger services from Vaasa in Finland to Umeå in Sweden. The first ships were steamers, which were only suitable for summer traffic. In 1958, an investor joined the company, whose funds were used to purchase the first car ferry. The company expanded over the following decades, but ran into difficulties in the 1990s and had to cease ferry services across the Kvarken in 1993.
Until 2001, when the newly founded Wasaline set itself the goal of reviving this northernmost year-round ferry crossing in the world. The scenic Wasaline route passes through the Unesco natural heritage site. The company presents itself as a small shipping company with a big heart - and a big responsibility for the environment.
In addition to the Wasa Express ferry, Wasaline will be operating the world's most environmentally friendly passenger ship, the Aurora Botnia, from 2021. No matter which of the two ships: Wasaline is reliable, friendly and quality-conscious. Every employee there wants customers to feel welcome and their crossing to be an unforgettable experience.
The Wasa Express offers pleasant ways to stay during the journey. Guests can relax in cozy lounge seats or travel in the comfort of their own cabin with bathroom. There are also special cabins for passengers with reduced mobility or for people traveling with animals.
Boredom will not be an issue during the journey on the Kvarken. There is an interesting entertainment program for young and old. Children can romp around in their own playroom and adults can store in the ship's store. The store offers wines, perfumes, great local products and much more. The restaurant on board serves delicious regional dishes and selected wines.
