The volcanic island of Ustica is located in the Tyrrhenian Sea and belongs to the autonomous province of Sicily. Literary experts assume that it was already mentioned in Homer's Odyssey. Since the Bronze Age, the island has been inhabited by Greeks, Romans and Saracens, among others. Various excavation sites are open to visitors. Visitors can reach the island by ferry from Palermo. The landscape is characterized by volcanic rock, historic Roman ruins and a multitude of caves. The Secca della Colombara shipwreck is particularly famous. The main source of income for the inhabitants is agriculture. Beluga lentils, which are used in a variety of local dishes, are a particular specialty.
