Spetses - the name comes from the Venetian "Isola di Spezzie", meaning "island of scents". The island was already famous in ancient times for its flourishing flora. It was still called Pytiousa because of its dense pine forests. Shipping and shipbuilding have left their mark on the island. The legendary Laskarina Bouboulina equipped ships here against the Ottomans and even had three of her own built. A museum on the island provides an insight into her life. Cars are not allowed on Spetses. You can explore the island on foot, by bike or very romantically in a horse-drawn carriage. This fits in perfectly with the ambience of the beautiful 19th century villas.
