The shipping company Viking Line

The history of Viking Line began in 1959, when the shipping company Rederi Ab Vikinglinjen was founded by a group of Åland businessmen and sailors. The first ship was the SS Viking. This ship was purchased in Great Britain and operated on the route between Gräddö in Sweden, Mariehamn in Åland and Galtby in Finland.

Competitors such as Rederi AB Slite from Gotland and Rederi Ab Ålandsfärjan entered the market early on. Increasing competition led to the founding of the joint sales company Viking Line in 1966, with Rederi Ab Vikinglinjen being renamed Rederi Ab Solstad. This cooperation enabled the companies involved to pool their resources and operate more efficiently. The fleet was expanded by several ships and the service was continuously improved to meet the growing demand for sea transportation in the Baltic Sea region.

At the end of the 1980s, the shipping company went through a difficult phase when Rederi AB Sally, an important shareholder in Viking Line, was taken over by the owners of Silja Line and excluded from Viking Line. In 1993, Rederi AB Slite, another partner in the Viking Line group, went bankrupt due to financial difficulties caused in part by the construction of the new ship M/S Europa. As a result, SF Line, later renamed Viking Line, became the sole owner of the Viking Line brand.

In the early 2000s, Viking Line pursued plans to take over its main competitor Silja Line, which would have significantly strengthened its market position in the Baltic Sea region. However, the project failed due to antitrust concerns, financial challenges and structural difficulties. In the end, Silja Line was not taken over by Viking Line in 2006, but by the Estonian Tallink Grupp. After the failed takeover, Viking Line concentrated on strengthening its own position and offerings.

Since the 1990s, Viking Line has undergone a series of modernizations and expansions. The company has been listed on the Helsinki Stock Exchange since 1995 and has continuously expanded and modernized its fleet. Particularly noteworthy is the use of LNG-powered ships such as the MS Viking Grace, which are among the most environmentally friendly of their kind. With a mixture of traditional and innovative services, Viking Line has consolidated its position in competition with other shipping companies in the Baltic Sea region.
