Samothrace attracts visitors with numerous small, pristine beaches, from the black pebble Kipos Beach to the popular Pachia Ammos. Poseidon is said to have watched the Battle of Troy from Mount Fengari. From the village of Profitis Ilias, you can climb the high, bare granite mountain itself and, on a clear day, see as far as Asia Minor. On the way back, the charming mountain village with its tavernas invites you to linger.
Samothrace was once an important trading center. Ruins of fortresses and towers tell of Byzantium and the Ottoman Empire. The famous Nike of Samothrace, now in the Louvre, was once found in the sanctuary of the Great Gods, the Kabirs.
