The northern Ionian neighboring island of Kefalonia is called Lefkada and is directly connected to the Greek mainland in the north in the area of its main town Lefkada by the highway 42. The strait there is only a few hundred meters narrow in places. If you take a closer look, however, the Levkas Channel is a movable floating bridge. There is another neighboring island to the south called Ithaca, the home of the legendary Greek hero Odysseus.
About 23,000 people live on Lefkada. The highest elevation, at almost 1,160 meters, is called Elati or Stavrota. The island is a popular vacation destination due to its beautiful beaches, remote mountain monasteries, diverse resort offers and, last but not least, the impressive panoramas.
