Heligoland Port Information
Heligoland is located in the German Bight, approx. 70 km from the mainland and belongs to the district of Pinneberg in Schleswig-Holstein. Heligoland consists of the 1 km² main island with cliffs and the 0.7 km² neighboring island "Badedüne". The main island is divided into Unterland, Mittelland and Oberland, which are connected by an elevator and a staircase with 184 steps. The historic lighthouse on the Oberland is now the strongest beacon in the German Bight and survived the Second World War unscathed.
Flora and fauna
The island impresses with its diverse flora and fauna, which is due to the island's special geological conditions. The bathing dune is an important habitat for grey seals, which give birth to their young here. The guillemot rock, a resting place for migratory birds, is considered the smallest nature reserve in the world and is home to numerous bird species. A spectacular natural spectacle is the "guillemot leap", where the young birds jump from the rock into the sea.
Sights
The bathing dune is one of Heligoland's main attractions, known for its quiet sandy beaches and the unique red flint that is worked into jewelry. Other sights include the colorful lobster shacks at the harbor, the "Inselmuseum Helgoland" with the "James Krüss Museum", the radio tower and the Nikolaikirche, which partly originated from the old island church.
Heligoland as a seaside health resort
Heligoland is considered one of the most important seaside health resorts in Europe.
