Gothenburg Port Information
By ferry directly to Gothenburg
There are two direct ferry connections to Gothenburg: from Kiel in Germany and from Frederikshavn in Denmark.
Kiel - Gothenburg
This is probably the best way to travel to Gothenburg: departing from Kiel in the early evening and arriving in Gothenburg the next morning feeling refreshed. Including the spectacular journey through the Gothenburg archipelago and the entrance to the harbor under the Älvsborgsbron.
[Kiel — Göteborg]
Frederikshavn - Gothenburg
If you prefer to travel by ferry during the day and for a shorter time, you can also travel directly from Frederikshavn in Denmark to Gothenburg with Stena Line. The route across the Kattegat takes just 3.5 hours and runs several times a day. Frederikshavn is easy to reach from Germany via the Danish highway. From Flensburg, the 360 km journey takes around 3.5 hours.
[Frederikshavn — Göteborg]
An alternative is the route Grenå - Halmstad (formerly Grenå - Varberg). The Stena Nautica sails twice daily from Denmark directly to Halmstad, approx. 140 km south of Gothenburg. The port in Halmstad is only a short distance from the highway, and the rest of the journey to Gothenburg by car takes approx. 90 minutes. Grenaa (also spelled Grenå) is located approx. 50 km north-east of Aarhus and can be reached by car from Flensburg in approx. 2.5 hours.

Via southern Sweden to Gothenburg
It doesn't always have to be the direct ferry connection from Kiel to Gothenburg. There are alternative ferry routes to southern Sweden from Travemünde, Rostock and Sassnitz, which are often much cheaper.
Travemünde - Malmö
The Finnish shipping company Finnlines sails three times a day from Travemünde to Malmö and back (twice overnight). The entrance to Malmö under the Öresund Bridge is particularly impressive. The onward journey from Malmö to Gothenburg by car takes around 2 hours and 45 minutes.
[Travemünde — Malmö]
Travemünde - Trelleborg
Very similar to the Travemünde - Malmö route is the corresponding route to Trelleborg, which is offered several times a day by the Lübeck-based shipping company TT-Line. The crossing is possible during the day or overnight. The onward journey from Trelleborg to Gothenburg by car takes approx. 3 hours.
[Travemünde — Trelleborg]
Rostock - Trelleborg
There are up to six ferry connections a day from Rostock to Trelleborg. Important: since September 2018, the two providers TT-Line and Stena Line no longer work together on this route. Therefore always check both providers! Until 2012, the route was operated by Scandlines. The onward journey from Trelleborg to Gothenburg by car takes approx. 3 hours.
[Rostock — Trelleborg]
Sassnitz - Trelleborg
The route from the island of Rügen is by far the fastest connection from Germany to Sweden. FRS Baltic's fast ferry takes just 2.5 hours to travel from Sassnitz to Trelleborg, with up to three connections per day. The onward journey by car to Gothenburg takes around 3 hours and 15 minutes.
[Sassnitz — Trelleborg]
Via Copenhagen and the Öresund Bridge
The classic "bird flight route" from Hamburg to Copenhagen follows the flight of the cranes (hence the name). The ferry trip from Puttgarden (on the island of Fehmarn) to Rødby (on the Danish island of Falster) takes just 45 minutes, the onward journey from Rødby over the Öresund Bridge to Gothenburg takes around 4 1/2 hours. The Scandlines shipping company offers combined tickets (ferry + Öresund Bridge).
[Puttgarden — Rødby]
If you are traveling from the east of Germany, take the alternative route from Rostock to Gedser.
