The North Sea island of Baltrum is the smallest of the inhabited East Frisian islands with an area of 6.5 km² and around 600 inhabitants. Baltrum is car-free and a state-approved North Sea spa. Visitors can reach the island by ferry or plane. There are no street names on the island, only house numbers, which are based on the year the buildings were built.
Baltrum is divided into three settlement areas: Altes Ostdorf, Westdorf and Ostdorf. The West Village is the center of island life with hotels, restaurants and stores. The island's landmark is the freestanding island bell, which rings for the evening church service and weddings.
The island offers numerous accommodation options, from hotels to vacation apartments. For self-catering, there are supermarkets and markets with fresh produce from the mainland. The island is ideal for beach vacationers, but also offers activities such as mudflat hiking, kiting, aqua cycling and the Baltrumlauf.
Baltrum is particularly attractive for families, as the island is car-free. Children can play safely on playgrounds and on the beach. Medical care is also guaranteed on the island. Marriages are particularly popular on Baltrum because of the romantic backdrop.
Baltrum is also an attractive destination in winter, especially since the Wadden Sea was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The tranquil atmosphere and fresh sea air make the island attractive even in the colder months.
