Larne is an important port city in Northern Ireland. It is located in County Antrim at the northern end of Larne Lough, a narrow inlet that connects the town to the North Channel. This channel is the strait between the island of Ireland and Scotland.

One of Larne's outstanding features is its modern ferry port. It is the most important link between Northern Ireland and Scotland. The ferry company P&O Ferries offers regular crossings from Larne to Cairnryan in Scotland, making this route a key artery for passenger and freight traffic.

Larne also occupies an important position on the European road network. The town marks the northern start of the European route E 1, which stretches along the east coast of Ireland via Belfast and Dublin to Wexford in the south of Ireland. In Larne itself, this route runs as the A8 national road and later merges into the M2 towards Belfast.

In addition to road and shipping traffic, the railroad also plays an important role in Larne's transport infrastructure. The town is the terminus of a Northern Ireland Railway line, with Larne Harbour station serving as the central hub.
