The shipping company was founded in 1987 under the name "Antilles Trans Express" and initially operated fast ferries between the French overseas departments of Guadeloupe, Les Saintes and Marie-Galante. In 1989, the service was extended to Martinique and Dominica, and Saint Lucia was added in 1994. In March 2024, L'Express des Îles was taken over by the German ferry operator FRS.
L'Express des Îles operates several important ferry routes in the Caribbean:
- Guadeloupe (Pointe-à-Pitre) - Martinique (Fort-de-France): This route connects two of France's largest overseas territories and is of great importance for passenger and freight traffic.
- Guadeloupe - Dominica (Roseau): This link enables exchanges between French-speaking Guadeloupe and English-speaking Dominica.
- Martinique - Saint Lucia (Castries): This route connects Martinique with English-speaking Saint Lucia and promotes intercultural exchange.
- Guadeloupe - Les Saintes and Marie-Galante: Within Guadeloupe, the shipping company offers connections to the smaller islands of Les Saintes and Marie-Galante.
The L'Express des Îles fleet consists of high-speed catamarans, including the "Perle Express" and the "Gold Express", which can each carry between 360 and 446 passengers. On board, passengers have access to air-conditioned lounges, restaurants and bars as well as outdoor areas.
