Køge is a small port town on the east coast of the Danish island of Zealand, around 39 kilometers south of Copenhagen. It is known for its well-preserved medieval town center and is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Denmark. Køge was granted city rights in 1288 and developed into an important trading metropolis over the following centuries.
The port of Køge has always played a central role in the development of the city. Originally established as a trading center for agricultural products, its importance grew steadily over the centuries. Today, the port is an important location for industry and trade and offers a ferry connection to Rønne on the Danish island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea.
