The Dodecanese island of Karpathos lies roughly halfway between Crete and Rhodes and also forms the southern boundary between the Aegean Sea and the open Mediterranean. Only just over 6,000 inhabitants live on Karpathos. Most of them certainly live in the main town of the same name in the southeast, which used to be called Pigadia. The remote villages there make a very traditional impression. There are beautiful mountain hiking trails and white sandy beaches where many water sports are practiced.
