The Corsican ferry company was founded in Bastia in 1968 and has continued to develop its services ever since. Initially, it only offered crossings from the Italian mainland to Corsica and back. Later, connections between Corsica and mainland France were added. Ferry connections to Sardinia are also offered under the Sardinia Ferries brand. Since 1996, more high-speed ferries have been deployed, thanks to which crossing times have been significantly reduced and more passengers transported. The ferries of Corsica Ferries are characterized by their yellow hull, which also sets them apart visually from the ships of other lines.
There are currently thirteen ferries in operation, offering passengers a high level of comfort on board as well as regular crossing times. The largest part of the fleet - eight ships - belongs to the "Megas" category. With space for up to 2,200 passengers and up to 700 vehicles as well as an extensive range of entertainment on board, the "Megas" combine speed, comfort and a large capacity. In addition to loungers and cozy cabins, there are restaurants, bars, a swimming pool, a children's playroom and a boutique on board. The "Mega Smeralda", which entered service in 2008, has its own on-board spa, while the somewhat smaller ferries in the "Cruise Ferries" category are just as comfortably equipped and make regular crossings. They have a capacity of up to 1700 passengers and 550 vehicles. The four ships in this category also have cabins, restaurants and playrooms for children.
The more compact fast ferry "Corsica Express Three" is used for the connections to Elba. It makes it possible to reach Elba in record time. The Piombino-Portoferraio crossing takes just thirty minutes, from Bastia it reaches Elba in ninety minutes.
