Today's port town of Castellammare di Stabia is located on the site where the ancient city of Stabiae once stood. Like its famous sister Pompeii, it fell victim to an eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD and was buried under the volcanic ash. Today, the city is primarily known for its excavation sites, where well-preserved treasures from Roman times can be discovered.
