The shipping company was founded in Athens in 2000. It emerged from "Strintzis Lines", a family business from Kefalonia that existed until the 1990s. Blue Star Ferries expanded and modernized the fleet and now owns 11 large ferries that can accommodate a maximum of 2400 passengers. Currently (as of 2020) only domestic Greek routes are served. The timetable includes connections from the mainland to the islands of the Cyclades, the Dodecanese and the north-east Aegean, i.e. to Chios, Lesbos, Ikaria, Fourni and Samos. On Crete, both the port of Souda near Chania and Heraklion are served. On the Adriatic route between Greece and Italy, Blue Star Ferries works together with the shipping company Superfast Ferries, which is also part of the Attika Group.
Blue Star Ferries' ships are among the most popular in the eastern Mediterranean and the shipping company has repeatedly won various awards. The ISO certifications ISO 9001 and 14001 from 2005 confirm the high level of service and the environmental management system. With the customer loyalty card "Seasmiles" in blue, silver and gold, miles can be collected and later redeemed in various ways.
The on-board magazine "On Blue", which is published three times a year, is available free of charge on all Blue Star Ferries ships. In addition to information about life on board, each issue of the attractive glossy magazine also presents several vacation destinations in Greece and provides tips on all aspects of travel.
